My transition to Corporate from the Olive Green uniform - Initial Thoughts

After having donned the Olive green uniform for 20 years in the Indian Army , I recently transitioned to corporate world.  After 4 years of military training and over 20 years of military life lot of people ask me about my journey and my thoughts on how I felt after transitioning. Additionally after having transitioned I feel I have had to learn a lot of new things and have to continue learning to be sustain myself as well as be successful in my chosen career. This blog is my attempt to document my transition as well share my learning journey while transitioning and after landing a job.

Some of the key challenges in making a transition to the Corporate environment from Defence services are
  • Learning to work in a fully online environment where most conversations are on email and a governance mechanism consists of dashboards , action items with timelines, pre reads and pre alignment before the actual committee tracking the issue.
  • Adapting yourself and your family to the new world of working 9 to 7 and taking your lunch along to the workplace.
  • Knowing your domain well enough as people look upto to answer all queries regarding your department and
  • Adapt to the new people you work with - Peers , Seniors and subordinates where the structure is more matrix than hierarchal.
  • Learning to prepare a goal sheet for yourself and your team wherein you have to define the goals and action items for the whole year and expect your performance to be tracked on the basis of performance delivered.

These are some of my insights learned over last few months. I look forward to your comments and suggestions on what I should write about.

Do you want to join multiple PDFs online ?

Have you ever needed to combine multiple documents into one to submit a claim or an application? I found a nifty website that does that online effectively.  Sharing the link below  www.pdfjoiner.com  Just drag and drop all your files onto the marked area on the website and click on Join PDFs and voila all your individual PDFs are appended into one single document and downloaded back onto your system, The only feature I would like to have is to be able to give a custom name to the file. Presently the name of the file is pdfjoiner.pdf
